The Holland Pavilion at the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition Opening Ceremony
Giving waste a second life and practicing circular architectural aesthetics
In organizing the opening ceremony of the Dutch Pavilion at the 2018 Taichung Flora Exposition, the client demanded not only professional execution of the event but also the embodiment of the core values of the Circular Economy. This was also the team's first encounter with the Circular Economy. From a sustainability perspective, the Circular Economy emphasizes innovative design, focusing not only on preventing resource waste but also on resource reuse.
Creativity breaks through limitations, Go circular objects
Therefore, the team play creativity, make good use of on-site resources, effectively utilize various objects, and ensure that the media footage of the opening ceremony is visually appealing and achieves the desired publicity effect. The Dutch Pavilion itself is a product of the circular economy. The stage backdrop abandons the common composite board and uses recycled door panels from the sugar factory used in the main exhibition hall, combined with non-woven fabric in orange, the representative color of the Netherlands. It is assembled and fixed with very few iron parts to ensure safety even in windy conditions. In addition, according to the needs of the event, the declaration signing design planned in the process is specially designed to use the wooden doors of the building instead of paper signatures, reducing the need for additional signing boards and more effectively amplifying the visual effect of the media images.
After the ceremony concluded successfully, the stage backdrop was dismantled and moved to the Dutch Pavilion, where it was transformed into decorations for the exhibition, thus achieving resource reuse. Other items were also designed with future use in mind. For example, considering the short duration of the event, tulip USB drives were used for entry and exit identification instead of printed paper, and they also served as event souvenirs. Fans were used as signs to guide visitors from the Flower Expo entrance to the Dutch Pavilion, and they can be reused after the event.
